Spectrum is a review of American cinema from the past year that shows off new artists, new talents and phenomena. This year’s section offers 15 films, including the Sundance award-winning (screenplay) Safety Not Guaranteed by Colin Trevorrow - an intimate romantic comedy about an aspiring journalist and a sales clerk who is looking for a companion to travel in time, based on the cult novel by KL Going, Matthew Lillard’s Fat Kid Rules the World starring Jacob Wysocki, the crazy comedy Freaky Deaky by Charles Matthau (son of popular actor Walter Matthau) starring Christian Slater and Crispin Glover; Jack and Diane by Bradley Rust Gray - a combination of melodrama and teen horror movie, a story of two teenage lesbians starring Juno Temple, Riley Keough and Kylie Minogue with surreal animations by the famed brothers Quay; Sun Don’t Shine – a crime and road movie directed by independent film actress Amy Seimetz – protégé of the hero of last year's festival, Todd Solondz; a shocking portrait of Brooklyn hipsters in the Sundance-screened The Comedy by Rick Alverson; Jeff, Who Lives at Home by of one of the most important American independent cinema duos, Mark and Jay Duplass, starring Jason Segel and Susan Sarandon; Now, Forager by Jason Cortlund and Julia Harpelin – a drama for slow food lovers set among New York restaurateurs and professional mushroom pickers.
