Moonrise Kingdom dir. Wes AndersonMoonrise Kingdom dir. Wes Anderson

The Highlights section includes premieres of the latest high-profile titles. The festival opens with Moonrise Kingdom by the eccentric of American cinema, Wes Anderson, starring Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray. It's an unconventional, witty romantic comedy about two kids in love who elope and the absurd search organized to find them. The film opened this year's Cannes festival.

Argo – the hit political thriller by Ben Affleck, will close the film festival. Argo is the story of an unlikely but true daring escape by six U.S. diplomats from Iran during the 1979 revolution.

One of the most important festival premieres is Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, the fascinating story of the relationship between a visionary proclaiming he has found the meaning of life and a blindly obedient disciple. The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival; it stars Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, both considered among the Oscar favorites this year for their roles.

Lawless, yet another Polish premiere, is a film written by rocker Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat. It is the epic story of three brothers in the days of Prohibition, starring Shia LaBoeuf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Mia Wasikowska.

The section also includes films by Abel Ferrara (4:44 Last Day on Earth starring Willem Dafoe), Richard Linklater (Bernie – a ‘pisser’ dark comedy with Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine) and Michel Gondry (an unconventional portrait of contemporary teenagers, The We and the I)
